Results of Protests Arising from the Spring Series 2012 Race 1

I've uploaded my analysis and conclusions regarding the three protests that occurred during the race on Tuesday, May 8.

In summary, I attribute these protests primarily from conflicting and ambiguous rules in the Sailing Instructions that were compounded by errors made by the race committee. This situation was preventable, and for that reason I've made a number of recommendations to rectify the rules and race committee procedures as part of my analysis.

Protests that need to be resolved by a protest committee or with a hearing should be few and far between. Please use this avenue only when absolutely necessary, and if you find you have fouled another boat, take your penalty turn(s).

Analysis and Conclusions

Final Winter Series Race

The final races of the 2012 Winter series took place on April 21st in near perfect conditions.  13 boats including this weeks RC volunteer (thanks Obsession) got off the docks and took to the race course in 2 very competitive races.

The races were short Windward Leeward races that put a premium on getting off the start line well, finding the lanes where the water was flowing in the right direction and finally, sharp boat handling that tested crews to get sails up - down - packed and trimmed quickly.

Winners of the division for the series are Danu for Div 1 - Amigos for Div 2 - Mermaid for Div 3.  It should be noted however, only Amigos was able to win a race on the day, showing just how tight the competition was.

The BARC series continues this weekend with the IYC Semiahmoo Regatta.  Registration is required by all boats regardless of whether you are already registered for the BARC series.  You can registration here www.iycbc.ca.

The popular Spring Series starts on Tuesday May 8th.  Registration will be opened up shortly for it and I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy your Tuesday evenings in May and June with us.

Winter Series First Race

Well was that any good guys and gals last Saturday!  We did get wind, and what a nice surprise the 6-12 knot southerly was that remained pretty square with absolutely no sea to speak of for the entire race!  So what if a little fog refused to burn off, I think everyone had plenty of fun.

If anyone was wondering what we were waiting for with regards to the fog on Saturday – I was hoping that with the breeze the fog may blow out but it just never did!  At times we couldn’t even make out the other end of the starting line.

The club has no policy with regards to sailing in those sorts of conditions – so basically it is sail in your own comfort levels.  One thing I would like to point out is that in those conditions you may be sailing under collision regulations which are slightly different than our usual racing rules.  I would recommend that you have your running lights on at all times as that helps to determine right of way, as well as helps out others in seeing you in the fog – remember if you see red – you stop, even if you are on starboard tack vs the other boat!

As committee we lost sight of everyone after 4 minutes of the start.  We were able to follow the boats on the radar though which was kind of neat.

Results are posted and elapsed times in Div 1 and 2 were fabulously close!  And congrats to New Yorker as she has moved up to Div 1 and did very well in her first race there.

The start was great to watch and it seems like guys on Vampire have been practicing as they nailed it – well done DON!

So Vampire is RC for the next race on February 18thSee you all out on the water.

I am still waiting on a few boats PHRF numbers, so please get me those before the next race guys.

Cheers,
