Summer Series Part ll

PRYC Racers,

For those not out last night you missed a beautiful nights sail.  The race went off without a hitch ( unless you were on EX or Danu who both tangled with the turning mark for a while but got themselves cleared with some quick thinking.)

The race was similar to the first weeks race with the same course but we used start time #3 this time.

All boats got off the line on time in a nice 5 knot breeze and were headed north up the beach.  This week there looked like more wind outside and some reported seeing up to 8 knots out there, and there should have been current running in the right direction too.  However going up the beach is never a bad move and we found a nice lift up the shore and when we tacked out we got pushed in the right direction.

EX was the first to the mark but Avalanche was hot on their heels while Cinco de Mayo, Plus Ten and Marquis lll were not far behind.  The next 6 boats were nicely bunched up and everyone got to the halfway mark in less than an hour and spinnakers were everywhere - a beautiful sight for sure.

This week was different from the last race as the tide was ebbing.  That means you don't want to get caught out too far as you will be pushed towards Blaine if you aren't paying attention.

The order of the boats rounding didn't change at all halfway home, and the breeze was lightening up and the tide starting to roar.  On Cinco we knew we had to get to the beach as soon as possible but it was really tough as the tide pushed us sideways in the right direction but we didn't have much headway so were forced to jibe back and head out.

Once we got in line with the breakwater we were really bucking tide and Avalanche was way too far ahead to just keep following so we tried again to get to the shore.  This time after a few minutes we had pressure in the sail and managed to get in far enough.  We jibed back and it was game - set - match.  We caught a nice puff and flew to the finish line ahead of everyone and took first ( we actually got 6.2 of boatspeed over the water on the last jibe home J )

The next and final race in August 21st so mark in on your calendars and get out for the last race of the summer (remember to check the tides and currents for the time of the raceJ ).

If you could email and let me know if you are coming out  I would appreciate it as I will cook up some hot dogs and have drinks for kids after the race on E dock.

First off congrats to all the skippers and mates that came out last night!  I know we had a ton of fun on board and my 9 year old was asking if we can do this again next weekJ

A few notables for the night –

  • ·         Diversion and Marquis for single handling their boats and flying kites, very impressive.
  • ·         EX for helping blow up marks and taking and bring one back at the end of the night.
  • ·         Suenos gets the perseverance award for attempting to round the windward mark at least 3 times and then bringing it into the dock with them afterwards.
  • ·         Mischief for joining the club as a full member ( to be approved of course ) so I am guessing they did have fun out there with their new crew.

Results will be posted shortly to the website but here are the unofficial results.

1st           Cinco de Mayo – by a nose literally

2nd          Mad Dash

3rd           Avalanche – after dancing with a markJ

4th           EX

13th         Excelsis

This is a series so all races count to your final score.  If you weren’t out last night you can still register and join the fun on July 31st or August 20th.

Lastly, even though I think everyone knew when they were supposed to start, I will try and announce a 5 minute warning over the radio before the first starting boat.  So for last night I would have announced that Mischief has 5 minutes before their official start time this way everyone can know for certain that we are starting on time.

My wife took some fabulous pictures and will post them to the website when I get a chance.

Thanks,

John
